Some of the more common benefits of massage include increased circulation, decrease of neuro-muscular pain and discomfort, decrease of muscle fatigue, decrease in stress, decrease in injury due to overuse, and enhanced athletic performance. Massage also increases body/mind awareness and is a wonderful catalyst for moving towards wholeness.
The most recent medical and scientific research on the power of touch has proven that the skin produces more hormones and immune cells than any other organ in the body. When the skin and body are infused with nurturing pleasurable touch or massage on a consistent, regular basis the skin and body will produce mass quantities of growth hormones, anti-cancer hormones and immune cells that will naturally heal and strengthen the body/mind.
Hot stones therapy has been used for 1000’s of years in many different cultures and countries. Utilizing hot stones promotes healing and enhances the massage experience. Heat is transferred to the body via the stones and creates not only deep relaxation but also produces several profound physiological effects as well.
Stones heated to 130-145 degrees can penetrate up to 1.5 inches into the muscle tissue depending upon how long the stones are left on the body. There is noticeable hyperemia in the surrounding tissue which indicates increased blood flow and vasodilatation. This process oxygenates tissue and helps to cleanse the area and eliminate toxins.
Another fact about hot stones is that for every 35 degree rise in internal temperature, metabolism is increased by 12-15%. This rise in metabolism increases red and white blood cell count which acts to stimulate lymph cell production and detoxification. There is also an increased migration of leukocytes when hot stones are used on the body. Leukocytes help defend the body and fight off infection.
Cold therapy both has been used in conjunction with heat therapy and also can increase general metabolism. Cold Stones are highly beneficial to use in congested areas such as sinus congestion or any inflamed condition.
Acupressure – Acupressure is part of the ancient system of traditional Chinese medicine. In Acupressure, there are five-element theory and constitutional types, meridian energy pathways, and location and therapeutic uses of acupoints. Acupressure can be used to balance body energy, relieve pain and dysfunction, and promote general health.
Craniosacral – a massage protocol that utilizes light pressure to check and release restrictions in the craniosacral system. The client is fully clothed in this one hour treatment and the benefits of this therapy rely to a large extent on the body’s natural self-corrective activities. The therapist simply assists the hydraulic forces of the craniosacral system to improve the body’s ability to heal itself.
Deep Tissue – This is a generic term for a range of therapies that seek to increase health and well being by improving the function of the body’s connective tissue, fascia and muscles. For example Neuromuscular Massage, Structural Integration, and Rolfing are considered Deep Tissue Massage whereas Cranial Sacral, Swedish, Polarity and Rieki would not be considered Deep Tissue Massage.
Quantum Massage is a Deep Tissue modality as well as a subtle modality depending on the Clients specific needs.
Lymphatic Drainage – The strokes in this modality are intended to stimulate the movement of the lymphatic fluids in order to assist the body in cleansing and to improve the functioning of the immune system. This is a very specific modality which requires advanced training and precise movements.
Polarity – This therapy involves gentle manipulation and holding points or energy poles. Polarity philosophy asserts that energy fields exist everywhere and that the flow and balance of this energy in the human body is the underlying foundation of health.
Reflexology – Reflexology is accomplished by manipulating reflex areas in the feet and hands which correspond to specific body parts and organs. Quantum Massage includes reflexology in treatment protocol.
Shiatsu – A Japanese form of point work that balances the energies of the body in order to promote healing and wellness. This modality incorporates Acupressure, soft tissue manipulation, palpation of the major meridians, stretching, and range of motion exercises.
Sports Massage – Sports Massage is body work that addresses the basic needs of athletes. Techniques include pressure-point massage, friction massage, petrissage, facilitated stretching, compression, range of motion exercise, and stretches. Structural Integration – A massage modality that focuses on creating structural and functional changes in the body by focusing on manipulation and stripping of the connective tissue in the body.
Swedish – Developed by Peter Ling in the 1700’s, the term Swedish massage refers to a collection of 5 main strokes: Petrissage (kneading), effleurage (stroking) friction, vibration and tapotement (tapping).
Rolfing – Developed by Ida P. Rolf in the 1940’s, rolfingis body work that initially involves eight to ten sessions of deep manipulation or stripping of the fascia that in turn restores the body’s natural alignment, which may have become rigid through injury, emotional trauma, and inefficient movement habits.
Reiki – This form of energy therapy was developed by Mikao Usui in the late eighteen hundreds. Reiki is a gentle hands-on healing modality that helps to reduce stress, relieve pain and facilitates healing. Reiki is an energetic healing modality which does not involve manipulation of the client’s muscles or other soft tissue but rather focuses on channeling the vital life force through the body systems to promote healing.
Thai Massage – This body work has been practiced and taught in Thailand for about 2,500 years and is traditionally done on a mat with the client fully clothed. It involves stretching, manipulation, compression and peripheral tissue stimulation to the body as a means to relaxation and releasing blockages in the energetic and physical body.
Aromatherapy – Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils such as pine, eucalyptus, lavender etc to heal and tend the body, mind, emotions and energetics. Essential oils are fragrances that are extracted from flowers, herbs, bark, roots, wood, leaves and spices.
Ayurvedic Philosophy – This 5,000 year old philosophy of health and wellbeing is a part of the Vedas of India and is considered to be the root or the “mother” of all natural healing and also the root of allopathic medicine.
Connoisseur – a connoisseur is an expert in the area of fine domestic art; someone with discriminating taste. This is also a person who is especially competent in passing critical judgments.
